Coolsculpting Elite versus Liposuction

COOLSCULPTING ELITE VERSUS LIPOSUCTION

There is a really exciting study that came out from Korea, and this study was performed by Dr. Brian J.F. Wong and Dr. Sehwan Kim. In this study, they looked at essentially 15 subjects and they did cryolipolysis, also known popularly as CoolSculpting Elite, on participants. They placed the applicator on the subjects’ fronts and backs with their goal being to measure visceral fat. So let’s define visceral fat versus subcutaneous fat.

WHAT IS SUBCUTANEOUS FAT?

Subcutaneous fat is the fat that you can pinch. This is the fat that a lot of us will see. These superficial areas are the areas that are normally treated with liposuction.

WHAT IS VISCERAL FAT?

Visceral fat is the fat that’s underneath everything. It’s deep to the muscle and around your organs. Visceral fat is considered to be the more “dangerous fat.” This is much more metabolically active and can lead to many of the metabolic syndromes like diabetes.

WHAT COOLSCULPTING ELITE DOES THAT LIPOSUCTION CAN’T

So it’s well known that liposuction does not improve a patient’s metabolic health. Liposuction decreases your subcutaneous fat, but it has no effect on your visceral fat. Since the deeper fat goes untouched, this “dangerous fat” can lead to heart disease, insulin resistance, diabetes and hypertension. Patients oftentimes either do worse or the same after liposuction. That is n due part to the ratio of superficial fat to visceral fat actually worsens.

In this study, Coolsculpting Elite, or a version of Cryolipolysis in Korea, found that the patients had about a 10% to 15% reduction in their visceral fat. This was observed with the use of a CT scan since it is not close to the surface like subcutaneous fat. On this CT  they were able to quantify it and volumetrically calculated. What Dr. Wong and Dr. Kim found that by reducing visceral fat, perhaps patients are much more metabolically stable. In addition, patients are just going to be healthier overall.

CONCLUSION

So Coolsculpting Elite does not just treat the superficial fat. This study it actually shows that it decreases visceral fat. And to us at Aesthetic Skin, this is a super exciting finding. It means that not only are you looking better after you have done Coolsculpting Elite, you actually might be making yourself much more metabolically healthy.
